They can be user created (by clicking on the "graphics builder" button on the Devices tab in Clockwise). Makesure you have at least 1 device selected and you will see it live on your device as you create the graphics. You can also drag icons (jpgs or other bitmaps) on to the graphics builder window and they will be converted to Pixmaps.

Pixmap is single-buffered surface. Clients rendering into a single-buffered surface should call eglWaitClient() before accessing the single-buffered surface from the client. [See section 3.8 of EGL 1.4 specification, for more information] glReadPixels() flushes the rendering pipeline and hence I guess that the output is correct with it.
