Could not get the solution but got the federation running. What was happening was openam tries to write to LDAP store when linking accounts. It failed to do so with ApacheDS (for unkown reasons).

Hi all, I am running AM 7.1 patch 1 on Sun App Server 8.2 on Solaris 10.
