The 80GB with backwards compatibility is interesting as it does not include all of the PS2 hardware, but only the GPU, which is why it can't play as many PS2 games as the original 20GB and 60GB models which included both the CPU (the Emotion Engine) and the GPU (Graphics Synthesizer).

The original 60GB and 20GB launch models are backward compatible with PS2 games because they have PS2 chips in them. Does the PS3 support PS1 games or not?! Tired of adjusting my PS1 laser, I took to the internet and I can't get a straight answer. It seems the original fat model plays PS1 and most PS2 games and every other PS3 model plays PS1 games but not PS2. This is fine, I don't care about PS2.
