Sep 13, 2011 · QEMU does some form of dynamic recompilation, which makes it 1) faster than bochs and 2) more dependent upon the platforms it is running on, and as ia64 support does obviously not look so good, I guess you won't be able to use QEMU there.

Normally I use qemu-system emulation like qemu-system-sparc. But ia64 is one of those rare beasts that are not supported by qemu yet. I’ve found a bunch of qemu-ia64 GSOC projects but none of them got to booting anything. I did encounter ski before but did not manage to start anything in it.

Summary: Add support for IA64 system emulation in QEMU The KVM project had a working IA64 port that was able to run a virtualized system with KVM and QEMU as it was back in those times. If we take the hardware emulation from that and add CPU emulation to the mix, we should get a workable solution for IA64 emulation.

IA64 emulation. Summary: Emulating the IA64 instruction set Qemu implements all the of still-alive and soon-not-to-be-alive platforms out there, except for one! Itanium! We do have device emulation support for it in the qemu-kvm fork. There is existing firmware out there that even works with KVM on IA64. So all that's necessary to get people who don't have IA64 machines at home the fun of playing with it is CPU …

Re: Emulator/Simulator for IA64 FWIW, a Google Search for /Itanium Emulator/ or other such gets you to various articles and discussions on this topic. There are (potentially) some (commercial) options here, but I'd be willing to bet they're more than the US$500 or so that gets you a (decent) (used) Itanium box that can boot and run OpenVMS I64.

Progress information is printed when qemu-img receives a SIGINFO (on operating systems that support it). iscsi and rbd support again the filename option that was removed in 2.9. It should not be necessary to use it, but existing images might specify it as their backing filename.
