The RadeonHD (xf86-video-radeonhd) driver is designed for the ATI “R500” Radeon X1000 series and newer graphics processors. The driver is open-source and written by Novell with specifications provided to the public by AMD. Currently this support does extend to the “R600” Radeon HD 2000/3800 series.

RadeonHD. RadeonHD was the open-source ATI/AMD Radeon graphics driver project started by SUSE. The initial open-source driver support for the R500/R600 graphics cards was written in a new xf86-video-radeonhd driver but ultimately the efforts merged back into supporting xf86-video-ati.

It's been a long time in the making, but the xf86-video-radeonhd 1.2 driver has just been pushed out the door. RadeonHD 1.2 is the first new release for this open-source ATI R500/600 driver since December of last year.The RadeonHD 1.2 driver includes support for new AMD graphics processors, 2D XAA/EXA acceleration, and other changes.

Good news everyone, Matthias Hopf has been working day and night and now pleases us with randr support in radeonhd :-)) What does work so far: On my mbp1,1 I can turn on and off external displays at runtime, via xrandr --auto .
