May 14, 2012 · However, movie files with AAC 5.1 audio do not. I don't get any sound out of my receiver until I select the "Downmix multichannel audio to stereo" box. I have to set my AV receiver to convert the (now downmixed) stereo signal back to either Pro Logic or Pro Logic II to get some sort of 5.1 audio. Is there a way to fix this?

Jul 30, 2013 · The problem is with 5.1 AAC audio; my home theater receiver does not support decoding of this format, so pass through won't work. After a bit of online research, I found that the AAC format needs to be pre-processed to AC3 by the computer, then it will be decoded by the receiver as Dolby Digital. Oct 22, 2012 · AppleTV has never officially supported 5.1 AAC only Dolby Digital 5.1. The majority of amps/receivers do not support AAC, and AppleTV AFAIK has never transcoded on the fly to 5.1 Dolby Digital. Stereo audio AAC/WAV/Apple Lossless etc get converted by ATV2 and 3 to stereo linear PCM for optical output at 48 kHz (yes not 44.1 kHz even for CD) 16 bit.

As the documentation lists 5.1 support is available, you could try encoding a test clip using 5.1 discrete audio channels (preferably using AAC so that Google's transcode can maintain the same number of channels) and using VLC to verify whether the playback from the YouTube site still result in 5.1 channels.

The Tivo is not the only client for which AAC 5.1 gets down-mixed to stereo, the same happens on Apple TV, and FireTV according to some reports. You mentioned an AVR in one of your posts...most AVRs don't support AAC 5.1.
