Update: it turns out, the 3rd technical support guy actually knew what he was talking about! The auto provisioning url I mentioned in the OP shouldn’t have had the www in it, and the user name field was filled when it should have been blank (I guess it defaulted to “yealink” after factory reset of the phone?).
