Cabin Forum/Blog: Hi all, At the point of building up my roof and am second guessing my plan. I have a 22ft ridge beam comprised of 2 2x10s glued/nailed together (4ft between the splice). I plan to have 2x8 rafters attached to this on 16 centers and was originally thinking of ALSO adding collar ties a foot down from ridge as kind of extra insurance against the ridge sagging over time.

Feb 11, 2017 · As Spuce said usually the ridge board/beam is a none load issue, depending on the rafter and building design . On a shed or garage though if you do not have proper attachment to the walls or have walls that could push outwards when the roof is under load because of improper collar ties or lack of ceiling joists the ridge does take some weight.

Jun 09, 2010 · The Ridge Beam is supported by 8"x8" vertical posts. I desire the posts 20' apart in this portion of the building. So, the Ridge Beam would span 20'. ... assurance that the engineer is not over-designing the roof support. There is nothing wrong with the beam, other than cost. And cost IS my driving factor to look at other options.
