The main issue lies with Dolby Digital and DTS audio. These files only work over USB and the audio is only supported via pass through. This means Roku won't help you out if your system doesn't support 5.1 DTS audio. To get those MKV files and Roku 3 to play nicely, the easy workaround is to transcode them to a compatible format.

To my knowledge, you cannot use the Atmos stream from your ripped Blu Ray discs because that is in Dolby TrueHD. At this time, there is no Roku that supports TrueHD. While Roku also does not support DTS Master Audio, it will read the DTS core from the DTS-MA and stream that. Therefore, DTS-MA does not require audio transcoding, but TrueHD does.

However, no Roku box still supports image based captions, so that's another place the Shield wins. I can stream my UHD rips in 4K/UHD and TrueHD Atmos or DTS:X and display captions right now. No telling when/if Roku will ever support them both.
