Hi guys, I have to use a Cisco router supporting a huge amount of GRE tunnels (with RIP or BGP running on every tunnel). Which model is the best choice if the number of tunnels is 100? Which one if the tunnels are 400? Regards Stefano

Sep 23, 2009 · The Dynamic Multipoint VPN (DMVPN) feature allows users to better scale large and small IPSec VPNs by combining generic routing encapsulation (GRE) tunnels, IPSec encryption, and Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP) to provide users with easy configuration through crypto profiles, which override the requirement for defining static crypto maps, and dynamic discovery of tunnel …

Traffic forwarded through the GRE tunnel is encapsulated and routed out onto the physical interface of the router. When a GRE interface is used, the Cisco router and the router that controls access to the corporate network can support dynamic IP routing protocols to exchange routing updates over the tunnel, and to enable IP multicast traffic.

The term "VPN passthrough" on routers means that the equipment does NOT support one of the endpoints, but only that it allows traffic from those endpoints to "pass through". All NETGEAR routers support VPN passthrough for IPSec, PPTP and L2TP. To create one of these endpoints, see What is VPN (Virtual Private Networking)?

A VPN Passthrough is a way to connect two (2) secured networks over the Internet. This article will guide you on how to set up a VPN Passthrough on a Linksys Wireless-N router. QUICK TIP: Linksys Wireless-N routers are only capable of enabling the VPN traffic to pass through the device. You will need a VPN router and software to create the actual network to connect with your VPN client.

Some platform does not support GRE at all, some process GRE with its CPU which has very limited capacity comparing for the large volume of traffic that it is delivering through the specialized hardware processing. So we need to be careful when deciding to use GRE.

But I want to know other routers or firewalls support GRE tunneling. How can I know whether some routers support GRE if there's no mention in product specification without testing by myself? I also wonder that GRE is standard or used generally in network industry or not. Thanks.
