    I was using the unicode characters "medium black circle" and "medium white circle" as UI indicators. I did not realise there was a trailing variation selector and had just used the unicode code point in the HTML which Safari decided to display as an overly-large emoji instead of the reasonably-sized circles the other browsers displayed in my UI.

    Dec 02, 2007 · No, OS X only uses Unicode, so you have to convert the legacy character set stuff to that. Of course some apps, like TextEdit and Safari and Mail, can read things in legacy charsets, but they convert it to Unicode when they do. TextEdit can also save things in legacy charsets.
