^ Personally, I bought a PS3 controller from a friend for extremely low cost, and you simply download some drivers and it's good to go from the default gamepad layout within San Andreas. I've heard people use PS1/2 controllers with a $5 USB adapter, and "non" Xbox 360 controllers should work fine.
