The implementation of SMTP AUTH in sendmail 8.10 is based on a patch written by Tim Martin of CMU. He and Larry Greenfield also provided valuable feedback during further development and integrated our patches or implemented features we requested. Ken Murchison gave us a patch to support Cyrus-SASL v2 (inofficially available since 8.12.4).

Nov 27, 2009 · We have CentOS 5.3 and are using sendmail for outbound emails. We are trying to switch over to authsmtp service. Authsmtp requires sendmail built with SASL suport. How do I find out if my sendmail has been built with SASL support? If it is not, is it easy to build it with SASL support? Does anybody have any expertise with this?

In the stock sendmail.cf: # SMTP AUTH flags #O AuthOptions So yes, it looks like it is supported but you'll need to enable it in the configuration. UPDATE. As @AndyM points out in the comments, it looks like this is incorrect and in fact AUTH support is not compiled in to the native Solaris sendmail.

My solution was very simple. Default OpenBSD sendmail doesn't have SASL flag set, and can not do any authentication, even plain text. I actually expected that SASL is only used for "advanced" authentication. My -d0.1 output clearly shows no SASL flag.
