Oct 30, 2003 · The weight of the beam and the floor above will keep the shims in place. The shims should be masonary or metal, so they don''t compress or deteriorate. Also there should be an air gap at the sides and end of the beam to prevent deterioration of the beam by avoiding contact with the concrete. 2000 IRC 606.13 & R323.1#4

The Use of Wood Shims in Residential Construction ...

The only problem with using wood shims arises when the shims are too small to support the weight/load of the main beams. If the shims are cut from the edges of nominal 2x4s, they are only 1-1/2 inches wide. A single sliver of 1-1/2 inch wide shim will naturally crush under the weight of nearly any beam in a wood floor system.

Used to use the same thing as Meiland but recently found a great source for flat stainless stock in various thickness locally from a welder/fabricator is Sausalito. Oct 23, 2016 · I plan on using composite shims to make up the differences in the beam. Can a shim handle that kind of weight? Should I try to get a joist bender and bend the beam to the posts? Or just let it go and fix the issues with shims and planing with the joists and not the beam? I've attached photos. One of the beams everything lined up.

    http://www.inspectionnews.net/home_inspection/questions-from-home-owners-home-buyers-and-diy/25299-shim-between-girder-floor-truss-okay.html
Jun 16, 2011 · Is it okay to use wooden wedge shims between a girder and a floor truss? There are about 5-6 floor trusses in a row along the girder where they did this. I would have thought they would have just jacked the one end of the girder up and used metal shims underneath?
