Skeinforge has a support material option that many people don't use, but it actually works quite well if used correctly. It isn't perfect, but it can make a big difference in some prints. At the bottom of the "Raft" tab, there are a few support options. "Support Cross Hatch" - If checked prints support layers in an alternating cross-hatch pattern.

Mar 24, 2013 · I found if I wanted Support without Raft in Skeinforge I had to check both Activate Raft and Add Raft, and then set Base Layers to 0 and Interface Layer to 0 (to prevent a Raft), then uncheck Support Cross Hatch to make it easier to remove the Support, and then finally for Support Material Choice set it to Everywhere or Exterior Only.

Sep 14, 2012 · For small objects that need support, I often couldn't use Skeinforge, because SF made too many solid layers. Slic3r did a cleaner print of the model, but the support was unusable. I've been playing with Kisslicer and getting very good results. The support material is great, there is a 3D representation of the gcode.
