Oct 21, 2014 · We have decided not to integrate namespace support into the template syntax. The goal of Smarty is to speparate the design as much as possible from the business logic. With namespace syntax we would more and more of business logic into the templates. Instead ou can register a class with optional namespace for the use in the template like:

There is nothing special about Smarty support in PhpStorm. PhpStorm just offers basic syntax checking and highlighting for Smarty code/tags; code completion for standard tags plus possibly few other small things -- that's about it.

In principal I would agree and I looked at the Twig syntax before implementing my Smarty version of the renderer. Some syntax elements used in the Twig renderer are either not possible in Smarty to implement (eg the use syntax due to Smarty's lack of namespace support) or are not necessary (eg the widget name conversion to lowercase/underscore) or would be unnatural for Smarty users.
