Aug 13, 2013 · Please add 24bit / flac support in Sonos A workaround is to play from a PC (Windows 10 built-in music player), then select 'play on device', then select the Sonos player from the PC. So, since Sonos won't accept 24-bit streams, your Win10 media server must be down-converting the file.

Mar 26, 2019 · Sonos has no stated intention to support 24-bit officially. The fact that FLAC 24-bit is played -- apparently reduced to 16-bit -- is a side-effect of another change. You must downconvert your ALAC file to 16-bit yourself.

Aug 29, 2018 · OK Sonos, when did you sneak that one in? :D I discovered a few years back that Sonos could play 24/48 WAV files, but at the time (2016) when I tried it with a 24/48 FLAC file it wouldn't work (as expected, seeing as Sonos officially doesn't support hi-res).

Mar 27, 2018 · As noted in the linked thread, Sonos is understood to truncate to 16-bit at the start of the audio pipeline. (Ironically the processing itself is then in 24-bit.) If quality is the objective it could still make sense to downconvert 24-bit files to 16-bit, applying appropriate dither.

Feb 07, 2017 · Bit depth is a little less certain - in the Tom Cullen quote he says "There are arguments you could make about deeper bit depth". I'd be interested to know what they are. I note that Sonos uses 24 bit internally to process digital volume changes to maintain a useful dynamic range at low volume.
