There was a method to install it after Sony gave official OtherOS support the can, which I used myself a good half a decade ago, but you needed a custom firmware and it only worked on some of the models.

Jul 23, 2016 · What Sony did by removing OtherOS was a very bad and evil thing. One of the reasons I originally purchased a PS3 was because I could install Linux on it! In fact, Sony got sued by the European government for the forced removal of this feature. The reason they removed it was due to Geohot glitching the PS3's hypervisor from OtherOS.

So ya if you can do it I think everyone is right make it a homebrew PS3 machine. If Sony had turned a blind eye and the community kept supporting Linux on there... I have no doubt there would be some great distros for them.
