Either you use a codepage to convert everything or you use UTF8. UTF8 ensures that you can use any language you want and have it read by anyone else using SoulseekQt, which will hopefully become the majority in time. If I give the user the option to choose how to encode their outgoing strings then Unicode will never become a standard.

You highlight a problem I didn't think of. I always hoped the Unicode support in SoulseekQt would motivate whole international groups on Soulseek to switch to SoulseekQt, but losing a working ability to search using extended ASCII is individually more of a motivation not to switch. Thanks, Nir

You should bear in mind though that only about 1.5% of the Soulseek usership is on SoulseekQt right now, and the rest don't support Unicode searches as of yet. Last time I checked I had two instances of SoulseekQt searching one another and was receiving Unicode search results, but I'll check again.

The only way out currently is to entirely do without Unicode in paths and keep both folders and files "free of question marks." Just it escapes me why in spite of using both latest Qt and a recent Ubuntu flavor for distro, Unicode support is still such a huge issue in Soulseek.
