This does not work for me. Even after aptitude reinstall sox I still get a SoX was compiled without MP3 encoding support when I try to run sox afterwards. (Though admittedly I'm still running Lucid, this might work better on a more modern Ubuntu.) – zrajm Oct 23 '13 at 8:06

Now, I’m trying to put together a simple script to merge an MP3 playlist into a single MP3. Sox should do the trick … but it doesn’t come with built-in MP3 support (for obvious reasons). Here’s what I did to build MP3 support into Sox — many thanks to a good post by Michael Walma on the Ubuntu Forums.

For CentOS you will need to recompile SOX (the base repo has the sox srpm) with the libmad and lame-devel libraries installed (rpmforge has those.) Once that is done, sox -h will list supported formats. When mp3 libraries are installed, sox -t wav -r 8000 -c 1 <wavfilename> -t mp3 <mp3filename>

Feb 20, 2013 · Support for encoding with lame has been deliberately removed by the sox packagers. Perhaps this old post might help out, I have not tested it under more recent Ubuntu versions though (I see a version bump to 14.3.1 for starters):

Now it is quite interesting that Lame does have mp3 support but sox does not. But sox has more audio editing features than lame, which makes sox so useful.
