Spinrite is the only easy method I know of to tap into the very sophisticated self maintaining firmware now present on all disk drives. It’s good for beating disks to do their job. My problem with Spinrite is that it is limited by the drive manufacturer. Who has a vested interest in making sure his disk never reallocates and permits warranty return.

Whatever algorithm SpinRite is using does work correctly when the hardware/drivers don't have an overflow problem since according to SpinRite's tech support there are hardware setups which can apparently deal with the 3 TB capacity correctly.

Sep 08, 2017 · On the basis that all Hard disk drive media has fundamental storage defects, SpinRite corrects data errors on a statistical basis and rewrites the data to provide effective defect management on the disk's surface by finding weak areas on the disk and marking them as defects, which the manufacturers disk firmware may not be as effective with.
