As Trotsky wanted abandoning of the NEP, Stalin supported the NEP, and when Trotsky was removed from power, Stalin had no more incentive to defend the NEP. Stalin understood that opposing Lenin was an unwise stance to take if one wanted to gain support.

Dec 27, 2002 · He didn't have support of any of the land owners because he confiscated their propery and sent them to prison(or had them shot). So who supported Stalin besides the jews and the people that were a part of the communist political system? I think if Stalin would have had any popular support at all he wouldn't have had to have been a dictator.
