The solution suggested in the below link to use nomodeset in /etc/default/grub works fine for Dell XPS 15. But it won't load your acpi drivers due to which I am not able to use the brightness controller. You can also try to boot in with the recovery mode which by default doesn't load your graphics drivers allowing you to boot into your system.

to get your wifi module up again after reboot, you could try to create a file here sudo gedit /etc/pm/config.d/config and paste SUSPEND_MODULES="your-wifi-driver" into it. I tried this and a bunch of other tweaks nothing works. It started with 11.10 and happens with ubuntu 11.10, xubuntu 11.10, and mint 12. Screen is always bright until mid way through boot then goes totally dim and the system setting for screen is all the way down and box for dim screen to save power is checked at every reboot no matter what I set before reboot.
