Jan 02, 2017 · It would be nice if the support for loop devices could be implemented. I'd like to mount disk backup images from broken systems to extract the data, but this does not work without supporting loop devices to represent the single partitions inside the disk.

Aug 03, 2004 · The easiest way I know to do this is go to your Linux source tree, make xconfig (or menuconfig), select to configure loop device support as a module, make modules, and make modules_install. You may want to compile it into your kernel (not as a module) in which case see the threads here about recompiling your kernel.
