After eight days the seller had still not resolved the matter, and I noticed that eBay had sent me an e-mail via eBay Messages asking if I'd got my refund, and if not to use the option to escalate the case, or words to that effect. However, there was no link in the message, or in the case details, that would allow me to escalate the matter to eBay.

Surely not? Ive only ever had experience of one return. I was the buyer, the seller didnt repond to the case at all so I escalated it and I still had to send the item back. As the buyer you have to escalate the case if the seller is uncooperative - and ebay will sort it.
