Firefox already have some Applescript support, so I imagine all the further work needs to go into Thunderbird directly. I'm thinking that what needs to be supported is just the equivalent library to the command line interface. The command line interface is fairly useless on OSX because it does not work if Thunderbird is already running.

I can't hold out high hopes: adding more AppleScript support has been on in the bug tracking system for 17+ years and doesn't seem to have any momentum. Probably your best bet for now is to find hacks other people have posted rather than waiting for a more complete API on Firefox's side.
