I had to make sure that Thunderbird was the default mail client and then use Registry Editor to create a registry entry called MAPI of type REG_SZ and with a value of 1 in these two keys:-

Further, any newly released programs will use enhanced mapi from the start - This PRECLUDES the use of Thunderbird to send mail from those apps. In the business world, this lays a heavy hand AGAINST Thunderbird as it is unlikely that two email apps will be supported by IT. I'm BEGGING for TB to support Enhance MAPI.... even if it is via addon!

Jun 30, 2010 · Thunderbird supports "Simple MAPI", an API intended to let applications call the default email client to send a message etc. without knowing anything at all about what email client is used. I suspect your scanners "scan to Email" facility uses that.

Jun 07, 2018 · Since we focus on Office 365 programs, we don’t know if Thunderbird supports MAPI. You can contact Thunderbird support to check if they can help you on this problem. For now, please change the default mail application to the Outlook client. Sign in the Outlook client and Word with the same Office 365 for Business account.
