How to active TRIM on Linux? The first thing to know is that TRIM should be enabled on all I/O abstraction layers. This means that if you have an ext4 partition on top of LVM, which in turn is on top of an encrypted volume with LUKS/dm-crypt, then you must enable support for TRIM in these three layers: The filesystem, LVM and dm-crypt.

Mar 25, 2009 · SSD TRIM support on Linux. Has anyone heard about whether the kernel/fs modules will attempt TRIM support for SSD's. This is the page delete trimming option so SSD's don't slow down quite as much when you fill them with data. Kerneltrap.org seems to be toast, and google isn't much help. Any news is appreciated.

With the default kernel, the fstrim linux command is not supported on USB devices. So by default in Ubuntu you do not have the automatic TRIM of your USB SSD. However, you can manually trim (or possibly setting up a cron job) by using the wiper.sh script located in /usr/share/doc/hdparm/wiper/wiper.sh.gz
