Newer Ubuntu versions e.g. 13.04 have already a GVFS version which support MTP. But these are no LTS versions of Ubuntu, which I recommend for the average user. But it is quite easy to install a newer version of GVFS on Ubuntu 12.04 (and 12.10) that does support it. First you need to start a terminal.

At least that's what I noticed for the Samsung device when switching from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04. The phone supports both PTP and MTP, but Ubuntu 12.04 apparently only supports PTP; so that's what was used. Since the new Ubuntu version has built-in support for MTP, this is now used instead.
