At least that's what I noticed for the Samsung device when switching from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04. The phone supports both PTP and MTP, but Ubuntu 12.04 apparently only supports PTP; so that's what was used. Since the new Ubuntu version has built-in support for MTP, this is now used instead.
