If you wanted to compile an Ubuntu system from source code you would have to discover all the pieces of software (Kernel, X windows, all other software on top of that) that Ubuntu uses and compile it yourself. When I look around for how to make available the thing asterisk DEMANDS, all I find is old documentation and something that explains how termcap is obsolete - but NOTHING to PROVIDE IT ANYWAY so I CAN COMPILE ASTERISK.
