Ubuntu Precise, for example, has two kernels, pae and non-pae, and seems to choose the correct one. Can't the kernel detect this during runtime yet? Ubuntu, again, for later kernels seem to have dropped -pae from their kernels. I don't know if this means they've dropped pae support (which I doubt) or it is detected during runtime.

This means that if you have an x86 CPU that lacks PAE support, you can not run Ubuntu beyond 12.04 (unless you find/build a non-standard kernel). However, there are CPUs, especially Pentium M CPUs that have perfect PAE support, but they do not advertise it properly – and Ubuntu refuse to try to run the PAE-kernel at all (but it works perfectly).

Since Ubuntu 12.10, it is a required feature. Some Pentium M CPUs have the PAE feature implemented, but the processor does not announce the feature properly. Since Ubuntu 14.04 the above forcepae option is available, to allow Linux to use PAE even if the CPU officially does not support it. This affects mostly laptops from perhaps 2000-2005.
