Aug 17, 2018 · Lubuntu and Xubuntu offered a PAE and a non-PAE release up to and including 12.04, but from 12.10 only the PAE releases are maintained. A number of older Pentium M processors produced around 2003-4 (the Banias family) do not display the PAE flag, and hence a normal installation fails.

Ubuntu Precise, for example, has two kernels, pae and non-pae, and seems to choose the correct one. Can't the kernel detect this during runtime yet? Ubuntu, again, for later kernels seem to have dropped -pae from their kernels. I don't know if this means they've dropped pae support (which I doubt) or it is detected during runtime.

I have several ALIX systems (powered by the AMD Geode LX processor without PAE support) that are still running on Ubuntu 12.04, the last Ubuntu-Release to supports non-PAE kernels (i.e. compiled for the i586 architecture). I use them as low-profile, general purpose (internal) servers (SSH, file serving, cron jobs, small web apps), which is why I chose Ubuntu in the first place.
