PAE - Community Help Wiki

Aug 17, 2018 · Lubuntu and Xubuntu offered a PAE and a non-PAE release up to and including 12.04, but from 12.10 only the PAE releases are maintained. A number of older Pentium M processors produced around 2003-4 (the Banias family) do not display the PAE flag, and hence a normal installation fails.

linux - What processors do/do not support PAE? - Server Fault

Ubuntu Precise, for example, has two kernels, pae and non-pae, and seems to choose the correct one. Can't the kernel detect this during runtime yet? Ubuntu, again, for later kernels seem to have dropped -pae from their kernels. I don't know if this means they've dropped pae support (which I doubt) or it is detected during runtime.

How To Install Ubuntu 12.04 On Non-PAE Capable Hardware ...

    http://www.webupd8.org/2012/05/how-to-install-ubuntu-1204-on-non-pae.html
Ubuntu 12.04 (as well as Kubuntu 12.04 and newer Ubuntu versions) uses the PAE Linux kernel by default for 32bit ISOs so old computers that don't support PAE can't boot the latest Ubuntu version. But there is a way to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin on computers without PAE support: using the non-PAE netboot Minimal ISO (there are also some alternatives, see below).

linux - Up-to-date distros supporting 32-bit i586/non-PAE ...

    https://serverfault.com/questions/888285/up-to-date-distros-supporting-32-bit-i586-non-pae-specifically-for-alix-boards
I have several ALIX systems (powered by the AMD Geode LX processor without PAE support) that are still running on Ubuntu 12.04, the last Ubuntu-Release to supports non-PAE kernels (i.e. compiled for the i586 architecture). I use them as low-profile, general purpose (internal) servers (SSH, file serving, cron jobs, small web apps), which is why I chose Ubuntu in the first place.
