Apr 07, 2017 · If you use an nVidia graphics card on your Ubuntu machine and wish to use a Windows (or, as far as I have read, basically any) virtual machine on VirtualBox for tasks that Ubuntu is not (yet) good enough and wish to enable the “experimental” 3D acceleration support, you will be unpleasantly surprised to find out that this 3D support is virtually unusable, flickering and blinking at will.

May 26, 2014 · We got Ubuntu VirtualBox running on an OSX host ().Unfortunately, it is running incredibly slow. I opened Activity Monitor on my OSX to review the %CPU being used, and noticed that VirtualBox VM is running anywhere between 98-106% of the CPU:. The issue is that if 3D acceleration is not made active, the CPU ends up being overburdened.

Mar 16, 2012 · My set-up: Host: Ubuntu 11.04 (fully updated), with standard Unity 3D. Virtual Box: latest version (4.1.8). Guest: Ubuntu 12.04 Beta (fully updated) with 3D enabled, and Guest Additions installed. The problem is that the guest 12.04 does not recognise 3D, so I cannot run 3D with 12.04. My host 11.04 runs 3D without any problem.

Experimental support for hardware-accelerated DirectX inside VirtualBox also exists. It is called WineD3D and supports only DirectX-8 (not 7 and not 9 !). 3D Mark 2001 is known to work. This will allow to reach 90% of native speed, so this is very fast solution.
