AS 1684 Residential Timber Framing Construction. Underpurlin support (Plan E)

In a conventional roof frame the underpurlins support the underside of the rafters. This allows for the most economic rafter size and prevents the roof from sagging and collapsing. Underpurlins must be in single lengths where possible. They must be in straight runs at right angles to the direction of rafters.

If a rafter is supported on to points only (single span) and an appropriate size cannot be found in the tables then an additional support (underpurlin) is needed. Underpurlin must be supported by struts. Struts may be arranged vertically as shown in Figure 4 (a) or perpendicular to the rafter (b).

A typical method of rectification is the use of a bracing system to ensure that the undulation of the under purlin does not continue. This bracing system, is the diagram shown, is commonly bolted between two struts and the handle is tightened until adequate support is applied below the under purlin.

Nov 08, 2013 · The underpurlins can be supported in a number of ways, the most common is by struts (short posts) that commonly go down to the walls or wall framing. A strut can be supported in other ways including by a strutting beam that transfers the loads to walls either side of the strut.

Purlin plates are beams which support the mid-span of rafters and are supported by posts. By supporting the rafters they allow longer spans than the rafters alone could span thus allowing a wider building. Purlin plates are very commonly found in large old barns in North America.

The illustration shows a conventional ridge (colored orange). In homes with conventional ridges, the rafters support the weight of the roof and transmit the roof load down through the walls to the foundation and, finally, to the soil. The route taken by the weight of the roof through the framing members to the soil is called the “load path.”
