When I insert an audio CD it is visible in Windows Explorer, but it is not recognized as an audio CD. It says the format is unknown. There is no copy-protection on any of the CDs I tried. When the Passthrough option is on, which is normally only for writing, the CDs are recognized as audio CDs, but when opening them Explorer hangs.

For VMWare, mostly MS-DOS is required to install an beta for Windows 95 for example, but then you can just use an bootdisk with CD-ROM Drivers instead. But it works this way, if you want to put in a bit of time.

ICH AC97 is the only VirtualBox VM audio setting which allows me to get sound when running Ubuntu as a guest and either Windows or OS X (10.6.8) as the host.
