VirtualBox, unfortunately, does not support features that would allow guest OS to sleep or hibernate. So there is no way to enable hibernation in the guest Windows system. But unless you specifically need to use the hibernation in the guest system (e.g. for testing), there's really no need for that as VirtualBox itself has the similar feature.

Why not try it on a real (that is, not virtual) machine? At least it is easier to figure out hibernation modes that way. As for vmware, I don't know, but on VirtualBox, there is a keystroke (as well as a menu item) to trigger the hibernate logic. – wallyk Apr 26 '19 at 1:36

Re: "system firmware does not support hibernation" on Dell XPS 13 L321X after motherboard Dell tech found a solution for this, adding it here for the record. Apparently it's iRST, Intel Rapid Start Technology that's the issue, related to the use of SSD instead of actual disk.

Same problem still exists with Virtual Box latest version, 2.1.2. Noticed someting new: If I run the Virtual Box, with Hardware virtualisation enabled, and then close Virtual Box and all runing machines, the system will not go to hibernation (same issue as described above).
