Mar 19, 2009 · Vista Home Premium & FAT32 support I just bought a Dell XPS laptop that has a Vista Home Premium 64-bit OS on it. I am trying to format a USB ATA Hard Disk (250GB) with FAT32 but Vista does not allow me. Does anybody know why? I have another USB 300GB hard disk that was already formatted with FAT32 and I can use it with this laptop with no problem.

Aug 22, 2007 · The first, and obvious solution was to make Vista run from an FAT32 drive, because EFI does support booting a FAT32 partition. A second reason you might want to have it as FAT32 is that MAC OS X doesn't have a Write/Read driver for NTFS filesystems.

Linux can read and write to FAT32 filesystems, and has done since very soon after FAT32 was released. Vista (Business) can also read and write to FAT32 filesystems. NTFS is the preferred filesystem for vista because it supports extended user permissions. FAT32 does not.

May 26, 2007 · I've been reading several books on Vista and in one of them it indicated that FAT and FAT32 were supported in Vista but NTFS was preferred. Later in the same book it says that Vista only supports NTFS...just wanted to get some insight into this. Thanks
