May 20, 2009 · Got it, here is what I did specifically to solve my problem... As guns1inger mentioned, the secret lied in specifying the correct font but for some reason, getting this done was like pulling teeth in VLC (at least for me). I didn't have to mess with any setting but the one under Preferences -> Text Renderer -> Font.

Nov 20, 2006 · VLC is actually Unicode-based on all platforms. Older Windows versions than 2000/XP don't support unicode completely or at all, so you need to install a compatibility layer, which is linked on our download for Windows page. It is possible that really old linux versions don't support unicode either, but they need to be extremly old then.

While I wouldn't necessarily expect VLC to support every Unicode character in existence, it should at least handle basic "extended" punctuation like bullets. I'm not sure why VLC is using some internal font with weak Unicode support, instead of depending on the system's own fonts (which in modern OSes are pretty Unicode-savvy).

These burned-in subtitles won't appear in VLC subtitle menu and there is no way to hide them 2) Soft subtitles. Imagine our movie is a single AVI file. Those "soft" subtitles are hidden somewhere within the AVI file, but they're not burned in the image.

The font settings can be adjusted for plain text subtitle formats. Font settings cannot be changed for rich text (e.g. ASS) or bitmap (e.g. DVD) subtitle formats.
