May 26, 2010 · So, are we getting out-of-the-box support for XSUBS in VLC 1.1 or not? People often say to me that Divx files can't have internal subs, and it's really embarrasing that I have to tell them "They can when the .divx container is used, but unfortunately the player I recommended to you doesn't support it, go by a standalone".

Nov 15, 2010 · W7 non-VLC free player with PGS subtitle support? I know VLC player has PGS and XSub support. I use it on Vista64. But the last 1/2 dozen releases, it crashes on W7 as soon as I touch it. So I can't use it. Even reinstalling an old version that used to work, won't work.

But you have to be pretty knowledgeable to connect the dots on that conclusion - I had to do a lot of learning and then finally came to that insight as hindsight. The documentation should have just come out and said it does not support Divx 6 features such as XSUB, et al. Could save a lot of people a lot of time.

These burned-in subtitles won't appear in VLC subtitle menu and there is no way to hide them 2) Soft subtitles. Imagine our movie is a single AVI file. Those "soft" subtitles are hidden somewhere within the AVI file, but they're not burned in the image.

Now avcodec supports subtitles. Adding XSUB fourcc decodes the 'small.divx' sample found on ffmpeg-devel, but only with avformat demux. VLC's avi demux will only send one 128 bytes block filled with '\0'
