To use virtual 8086 mode, an operating system sets up a virtual 8086 mode monitor, which is a program that manages the real-mode program and emulates or filters access to system hardware and software resources. VM86 can be very useful if one needs access to BIOS functions while in Protected mode. It is in fact necessary in order to set up video mode, as many modern card/chipsets lack support for the VBE3 protected mode interface, so setting up a VM86 task that will perform the 'set video mode' call is the preferred method. Now obviously I understand that a kernel compiled for a 386 cannot execute on a 286 CPU, which is 16-bit. So my question is, why cannot the standard Linux kernel be compiled for a 286, and then executed on a 286? Does Linux require hardware VM86 support?
