Nov 02, 2005 · Hello, There seems to be a misunderstanding about vMotion support with RDM's in physical compatibility mode. Although there are a number of discussion threads stating that is not supported, it is not correct. vMotion works fine with RDM's in physical compatibility mode, and is fully supported by VMware.

Pre-requisites for vMotion support: vMotion is supported only for a cluster of virtual machines across physical hosts (CAB) with pass-through RDMs. The vMotion network must be a 10Gbps Ethernet link. 1Gbps Ethernet link for vMotion of MSCS virtual machines is not supported. vMotion is supported for Windows Server 2008 SP2 and above releases.

A virtual machine and its host must meet resource and configuration requirements for the virtual machine disks to be migrated with Storage vMotion. Storage vMotion is subject to the following requirements and limitations: Virtual machine disks must be in persistent mode or be raw device mappings (RDMs).

Feb 11, 2015 · In vSphere 6.0, you can configure two or more VMs running Windows Server Failover Clustering (or MSCS for older Windows OSes), using common, shared virtual disks (RDM) among them AND still be able to successfully vMotion any of the clustered nodes without inducing failure in WSFC or the clustered application.

Feb 06, 2012 · Each server is currently configured with two 64GB RDM LUN’s that mirror via the proprietary HCIS method. The HCIS vendor insists that these LUN’s remain RDM’s and they will not support VMDK storage. If I could simply storage vMotion these RDM’s from the CX4 to the VNX, it would save me a world of work and planning.

Apr 15, 2014 · I was having a conversation with one of our tech support guys (Greg Williams) recently about the relaxation on the requirement to allow Raw Device Mappings (RDMs) to be presented to different hosts using different SCSI identifiers and still do vMotion operations in vSphere 5.5. You can read that post here where I described how the restriction has been relaxed. Greg mentioned that he …

Raw Device Mapping aka RDM is a way for providing virtual machine direct access to LUN on the SAN storage. The LUN presented to VM can be then formatted with any filesystem like NTFS or FAT for Windows OS and thus there is no need to format the LUN with VMFS filesystem and then place a …

InfoScale support for SCSI Bus Sharing configurations and VMware vMotion. Article: 100041415 ... Storage configuration in a VMware virtual environment involves the VMware vmdk and the RDM disks that reside on a shared datastore. To access the disks, a virtual machine uses virtual SCSI controllers that can have None, Physical, or Virtual type of ...

1005241, This article discusses some of the common questions that arise when migrating virtual machines that use Raw Device Mappings (RDMs).Migrating virtual machines with RDMs can be performed in three ways:Warm migration (vMotion), with the virtual machine powered on.Cold migration, with the virtual machine powered off.Storage migration (Storage vMotion), with the virtual machine …

vMotion does not support migration between 2 arrays. vMotion just moves VM to another ESX Host and doesn't migrate RDM LUN to the new array. I reckon RDM is or should be visible on the target ESX Host as well.So this could be the procedure: - Migrate the source LUN to the target array.
