Sep 26, 2012 · We are using an USB Server (like Keyspan) to attach our GSM-Modems to the VM's. This is without rebooting the ESX-host. The HW isn't expensive and you can move the VM in your Cluster without thinking where you must boot the VM for recognizing the USB-Device.

I need to attach a fax modem to a VM running on my VMware host. My host is a Dell R510 and I have a PCI-e fax modem already installed. When I tried searching for answers I saw where PCI had some issues and recommended using USB. So I have both USB & PCI-e, Brand, USR fax modems.

If i decided to virtualize my exchange server, would I be able to use my USB modem? I'm setting up a test now to see how that works out with my USB modem on that virtual box.

Aug 05, 2015 · I've used USB ports with virtualised servers since ESX 3.0 (i.e. before VMware supported USB). If you value your sanity then I strongly suggest that you don't use USB directly from the host server as then you have the problem of VM being tied to physical machine.
