Jun 09, 2010 · Unfortunately the NIC that VMware emulates does not support Multicast (some intel nic). I ran into this problem running (Junos - thats juniper OS) on vms for testing porpuses, routing protocols that used multicast traffic will not work. And had to be tweaked to use Unicast which made it all the much difficult.

In addition to the default basic mode for filtering multicast traffic, vSphere Distributed Switch 6.0.0 and later releases support multicast snooping that forwards multicast traffic in a more precise way based on the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) and Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) messages from virtual machines.

In a multicast network, traffic forwarding requires both the unicast and the multicast routing protocols to converge. PIM Sparse-mode also requires that the Rendezvous Point (RP) for a multicast group is known before any control or data traffic for the multicast group is processed.

Use multicast snooping on a vSphere Distributed Switch to forward traffic in a precise manner according to Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) or Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) membership information that virtual machines send to subscribe for multicast traffic.

I have fielded a number of questions on VMware’s multicast support and figure it is time I did a short blog on it. There is a good white paper on the topic on the VMware site called Multicast Performance on vSphere 5.0 that deals with performance changes that have been made to enhance multicast support in vSphere 5. The recurring question I get is how multicast is handled in vSphere.

May 03, 2013 · In the last post here, I provided some details on vSphere hosts configured as VTEPs in a VXLAN deployment. Also, I briefly mentioned that Multicast protocol support is required in the physical network for VXLAN to work. Before I discuss how Multicast is utilized in VXLAN deployment, I want to briefly talk about some of basics on Multicast.

vSAN data traffic requires a low-latency, high-bandwidth link. Witness traffic can use a high-latency, low-bandwidth and routable link. To separate data traffic from witness traffic, you can configure a dedicated VMkernel network adapter for vSAN witness traffic.. You can add support for a direct network cross-connection to carry vSAN data traffic in a vSAN stretched cluster.

Multicast Filtering Because of limitations in the original VMware vSwitch forwarding model and the construction of the multicast mechanism, multicast traffic passing through a vSwitch can be received by virtual machines which have not subscribed to the multicast group sending that traffic.
