I think it's trying to use the TSC (Time Stamp Counter ?) function of the CPU. It should be more accurate that way. I tried it because: 1) the warning mentioned _falling_ back to SIOCGSTAMP 2) the -U option said "(the old behaviour)" And it quieted the warning :) Now why My athlon with TSC in the CPU doesn't use SO_TIMESTAMP is probably a bug.

James I used to find this realy annoying. I use redhat 6.2 and came accross this when I updated to iputils-20001010-1.6x.i386.rpm. Then one day it disappeared. This coincided with a kernel rebuild. I suspect that you are running the default kernel which doesn't support SO_TIMESTAMP. hope this helps ...
