So maybe support is limited to certain hardware. Ex. Haswell laptop, nvidia 755m (optimus), a wayland session falls back to Intel Coffee lake laptop, nvidia 1060 only (no Intel iGPU), falls back to llvmpipe. In the later case it maybe should fall back to nouveau?

Oct 31, 2017 · No. Most of the open source drivers have been undergoing rewrites in recent years to support KMS, GEM, and other modern graphics technologies which move more of the graphical functionality into the Linux kernel. Wayland leverages (and requires) these technologies; indeed the whole reason Wayland can exist is because of these changes.

Some major distributions will be switching to Wayland in the near future. Currently, the video driver included with the guest tooling does not support Wayland. Running a virtual machine results in a black screen after boot (with the correct resolution). Tested with Fedora 21 Alpha. The full VBox.log from a machine starting Wayland is attached.

No, that is outside the scope of Wayland. To support remote rendering you need to define a rendering API, which is something I've been very careful to avoid doing. The reason Wayland is so simple and feasible at all is that I'm sidestepping this big task and pushing it to the clients.

I was wondering if there is an ETA on when NVidia will fully support Wayland (if not already)? I have the latest proprietary driver installed (GeForce 940M 390.25 driver) however, I have to set the GPU (prime-select) to Intel in-order to login (otherwise need to fix using tty2).
