ActiveMQ supports standard messaging protocols like AMQP, STOMP, MQTT etc whereas IBM MQ just comply with JMS and its own protocol. IBM MQ Light supports AMQP though. IBM MQ is much preferred in enterprise environment, probably due to the support. Redhat AMQ offers enterprise support on ActiveMQ. AFAIK documentation wise, they are at par.

However Websphere MQ doesn't support the STOMP protocol, which is spring-websocket's default. MQTT seems like the easiest supported protocol to use instead. Ideally our front-end web clients will continue to use STOMP, but I'm also OK with migrating them to MQTT if needed.

In either case, any MQ version older than v7 is no longer supported by IBM so at a minimum you should be using MQ v7.0.1, preferably one even more recent because that version has end of support September this year. All versions of MQ can act as an XA transaction coordinator or use the services of an external XA transaction coordinator.
