Try this. I can't find any local servers that have a self-signed certificate to try this on myself. Sorry. Copy the signer's certificate from the box the box that signed the certificate to your AIX box, then use the "--ca-certifcate=<path to file>" argument to specifiy it.

Can you do a quick test on another URL using https? Also, type wget -h to make sure it is recognizing the ability to do secure https downloads. If it is not, you need to get a different combination of wget and openssl. At least that is where I would start

The reason I'm looking for an alternative is simply that I'm trying to execute a connectivity test from a server which currently doesn't have wget or curl installed. The server concerned is under strict change control and so installing new software on it is a no-no. The operating system installed on the server is AIX.
