Oct 09, 2008 · I am very glad to hear that WICD-team is willing to look into 3G support. We all realise that 3G is getting very popular in business environments (VPN connections with the company oàver the internet) and personal computing as well (remote areas without fixed line / xDSL).

May 31, 2010 · Many distros use Network Manager to look after wired and wireless network connections. This works quite well but has heavy dependencies if you are not using GNOME and doesn't start up your wireless connection until after your desktop has loaded and a password given, because it is designed for multi-user environments.

WICD tends to deal well with wireless and basic ethernet connectivity, but doesn't yet support VPNs, DSL, 3G/CDMA and many other features which are becoming more and more popular. This isn't meant as a slight towards the WICD folks, it does help people get online and that's great, but fixing it all the way down the stack is a better overall for Linux.

-- Connman 3G currently support Ericsson MBM modems only. A plugin model exists for supporting other devices. It's unclear at this point whether Connman will support Modem Manager or only support the new joint Intel/Nokia project called oFono (http://ofono.org). See moblin bug #401.

Apr 20, 2013 · I use both depending on circumstances. Mostly to do with 3G dongles being recognised and usable with NM. But on the whole, it seems that Wicd is just more stable and reliable. A PITA having to swap about, so the sooner Wicd gets 3G support the sooner I can ditch Nm.

Aug 20, 2010 · Topic: Wicd and USB modem UMTS support Hi, I don't know if it's possible in someway to use a HDSPA/UMTS connection by USB modem with the last release of Wicd, but with mine, under Ubuntu (1.5.8), it cannot see my USB modem nor HDSPA connection.
