Feb 17, 2012 · I'm trying to enable my ups (APC Back-UPS350) on my new windows 7 desktop pc. APC told me to install PowerChute software/drivers. The install stops with a 'disable native windows power management' statement. I can't figure out how/where to do this.

There are a lot of references on the internet about the APC software (well, more like UPS vendor supplied software in general) being crap. Luckily, Windows Server 2008 (and 2003) have built-in support for APC UPSes. Furthermore when Windows Server shuts down, VMware Server needs to perform some actions on the guests as well.

Microsoft Vista, Windows 7, 8, &10, Windows 2008 & 2012 do not have a native serial UPS shutdown. For a serial UPS use PowerChute Business Edition or USB to serial converter. For any USB connected UPS these OS do have some configuration for shutdown if you do not want to use the supported APC software options.

When I had time to go to the server direclty I found it was a bad cable and the Windows Native UPS Support had not been removed properly. After upgrading to a newer version of Power Chute, and replacing the cable my issue was resolved.

Mar 30, 2011 · The APC Network Management Card gets installed into the UPS and it communicates with Powerchute Network Shutdown software installed on your own computer/server. If you want the VMs to shutdown when the Powerchute Network Shutdown initiates a Windows Server 2008 OS shutdown, you need to follow the instructions I posted.
