I could see that all the addresses were in one 16K block, so I just wanted to map that 16K block out of action.

This used to require a patch to the kernel that was never accepted upstream. But with Grub, it works on any Linux Kernel. It's useful while you're waiting for new RAM to arrive or if you're cheap (ex, old computers) and don't care if you're missing a few bytes of usable memory and willing to risk that memtest might have missed a few addresses that are only sometimes bad.

It is possible to run windows with defective memory by telling windows not to use the faulty address by manually adding entry to badmemorylist on {badmemory} section of windows BCD.
